: in a move that is beneath the dignity of the oval office, it appears that the obama administration changed the monthly jobs report for political gain. after he was crushed at the denver debate, the labor department announced that the unemployment rate dropped magically to 7.8% in september. and the job registered more than 800,000. that's one of the biggest one-month jumps in 29 years. let me say this one more time. the biggest jump since 1983, convenient, considering that barack obama finds himself in the midst of perhaps the worst political week of his life. while the president claims that the unexpected news is a sign that america is, quote, moving forward, there are a growing number of skeptics that are crying foul. chief is the former g.e. ceo jack welch. unbelievable job numbers. they can't debate so they change the numbers. he appeared earlier today on "your world." >> these numbers don't smell right when you think about where the economy is right now. every economist predicted roughly 90,000 to 120,000. this economy doesn't feel like the employment improved this level. it is just -

of the first presidential debate between governor romney of massachusetts and president obama. you see both men being greeted by their wives on stage. even this portion of the debate is negotiated ahead of time by the campaigns in terms of which members of their family will be joining them on stage. this is, these these are negotiated down to this level of detail. in terms of how the overall debate unfolded, i personally do not know who won this debate. i do feel that we saw this debate format die a very painful death on camera tonight. the contrast between the candidates was stylistic as much as substantive. president obama i think calm and basically explanatory tonight. governor romney, more hyper, and i don't mean that in a negative way, just sort of more amped, more assertive. and that manifests in a way that the debate format was just dismantled. the format and i think the moderator, with all due respect to mr. lehrer dismantled. this is one of those debates, you could predict the score more by time of possession in terms of who was speaking more. then you could by any other individual pla

college, the wall street journal and also nbc news. two-point lead for obama, that's down five points last month. keep in mind we're talking virginia, that's 13 electoral votes there. and check it out, similar story for you in florida. 29 electoral votes there. now, a one-point, one-point lead for obama, down from four points in september. we should mention here that poll shows the president still with the seven-point lead in ohio. we can't forget about ohio. but speaking nationwide here, the president's lead, in our cnn poll of polls, you can see it here, stands at 3 percentage points, unchanged. as we noticed today, kind of interesting, the president has gained one point and romney dropped one point. this is the gallup national tracking poll. obama with a six-point lead there, six-point lead in that one. the point to remember yet again here, game on in virginia. game on in florida with tonight's debate less than seven hours away. let's go straight to denver and to jim acosta. and, jim, does team romney, do they see the polls we ran through, is this a sign the race is tightening, is the w

be january 2009, when president obama took office. the labor department says of these numbers, employers added only 114,000 jobs over the course of that month. so that raises a let of questions about this headline number. many jobs added are part-time jobs. bill: stuart varney, anchor of "varney & company" in the fox business network. you read what? >> there is widespread mistrust of this report and these numbers. there are clear contradictions. 873,000 people said they had found work but only 114 thou knew jobs were created that is contradiction. if you delve a little deeper, seems a lot of these people who found work, that would be, that is the 873,000, if you look deeply, it turns out 600,000 of those 873,000 people were part-time workers. so they came back into the labor force and they pushed unemployment rate down to 7.8% but there is a contradiction here, between the number of new jobs created and number of people saying they found work. it was part-time work, bill. that's what it was. bill: how do you drop a third in the overall number and only add about 100,000 jobs? >> well the
